Delhi Mayor Election: A meeting is going to be held on Monday (February 6) to elect the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. This is the third meeting of MCD within a month in which an attempt will be made to elect the mayor. Before this, MCD meeting was held twice but due to uproar between BJP and AAP, elections could not be held. Let us understand this tug of war to elect the Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 10 points.
- The mayor’s election has been postponed twice. For the first time on January 6, questions were raised on voting for 10 members nominated by the Governor and for the second time on January 24, the presiding officer stopped the election after an uproar in the House.
- Looking at the numbers, AAP is likely to win the mayor’s post but its position in the Standing Committee is not certain. The Standing Committee is considered to be the most powerful body of the Municipal Corporation.
- In the MCD results that came on December 7, the Aam Aadmi Party came first by winning 134 seats. BJP got 104 and Congress got 9 seats. BJP is in control of MCD for the last 15 years.
- Of the 18-member standing committee, six are to be elected on Monday, in which AAP will get three seats and BJP two. There will be a fight on the sixth seat. If the 10 nominated members are allowed to vote, then it is likely to go to the BJP. The other 12 members of the Standing Committee will be elected through regional elections.
- There are 12 zones in MCD. Out of these, BJP has majority in 7 zones. In such a situation, BJP can win 7 more members of the Standing Committee. If this happens, even after the post of Mayor comes to you, the journey ahead will be difficult for him.
- Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party’s 134 councilors and an independent member have written a letter to the presiding officer of the civic body, Satya Sharma, saying that according to the rules, nominated councilors cannot vote. He wrote, “The nominated members should be excluded from the election of mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee.”
- Seven Lok Sabha MPs of BJP from Delhi, three Rajya Sabha members of AAP and 14 MLAs nominated by the Speaker of Delhi can also vote. The Congress has said that it will remain absent. AAP alleges that the Congress has made a behind-the-scenes deal with the BJP.
- The Aam Aadmi Party objected to the nomination of 10 members by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena without consulting the state government. The party also opposed the appointment of Satya Sharma as the presiding officer by the Lieutenant Governor. AAP had recommended MCD’s senior-most corporator Mukesh Goyal for the post.
- The question of the swearing in and voting of the 10 nominated members had twice stalled the mayoral election. In the first election held on January 6, members of AAP and BJP had clashed with each other and had pushed and shoved each other. Chairs were thrown in the house. In the second meeting on January 24, as soon as the oath of the councilors was completed, the ruckus started.
- The Aam Aadmi Party had also taken the matter of mayor’s election to the Supreme Court. However, the court refused to hear, after which the petition was withdrawn.
