Eyewitnesses to the crash of two fighter jets in MP’s Morena told that they heard a loud bang and then saw two pilots landing by parachute in the nearby bushes.

Mirage And Sukhoi Accident: Two Indian Air Force fighter aircraft (one Sukhoi MKI and one Mirage-2000) crashed in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district during a routine training flight on Saturday (January 28) morning, killing one pilot. While two other pilots were injured. The debris of both the planes fell in Pahargarh area of Morena district. Some part of the debris also fell in Bharatpur area of Rajasthan, which is adjacent to the border of Madhya Pradesh.

Eyewitnesses told that the people gathered at the spot pulled both the pilots out of the bushes and made them lie on the ground. After some time, the helicopter of the Air Force arrived and both the pilots were taken to Gwalior for treatment. According to reports, more than 50 military personnel have lost their lives in plane and helicopter accidents in the last five years.

Court of Inquiry issued orders

The Indian Air Force has ordered a ‘Court of Inquiry’ into the accident on Saturday, so that the exact reasons behind it can be ascertained. Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhary informed Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh about the incident. Rajnash Singh said, “We stand with the family of Wing Commander Sarathi in this difficult time.”

What was the reason for the collision?

“Though it was not a head-on collision, it appeared that the wings of the two planes had collided with each other,” said an official. He also said, “The investigation of this accident is still going on. It is very difficult to say whether there was some fault in one of the two fighter jets or it happened due to a bird hit…”

What did the eyewitnesses tell?

Officials said that no civilian was injured in the accident, nor was any property on the ground damaged. Villagers of Pahargarh and Pingora (Bharatpur) said doors and windows of their houses were shattered by the blasts. Eyewitnesses told that the people around tried to extinguish the fire in both the planes by throwing mud. He said that more than 1,500 people from 15 nearby villages soon reached the spot.

‘Saw flames in the sky’

Pahargarh sarpanch Shailendra Shakya told the media present at the spot, “I was standing with some people. We heard a loud sound like a bomb blast. Then saw flames in the sky and saw fireballs falling… Saw one plane fall in Pahargarh forest area and another in Bharatpur area.”
