Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Friday that rescue operations were continuing in less than 200 places in the region. The earthquake has killed more than 41,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

Turkish rescue workers pulled a 45-year-old man alive from the rubble on Friday, nearly 12 days after a devastating earthquake. Rescuers spent a week searching for survivors under the rubble in freezing weather. However, in the last few days the number of survivors has reduced to a handful.A man named Hakan Yasinoglu was rescued 278 hours after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Hatay, a southern province near the Syrian border. Pictures on social media showed rescue workers carefully carrying a man on a stretcher amid the ruins of a building. To avoid falling, he was tied to a stretcher and covered with a golden colored thermal jacket. He was immediately placed in a waiting ambulance and taken to the hospital.

His face couldn’t be seen, and unlike other late rescues (where rescuers cheered or clapped) here everyone seemed sad. Three more people, including a 14-year-old boy, were rescued late Thursday night and early Friday, with searches continuing round-the-clock at some places.

Earthquake tremors were felt in 11 provinces of Turkey. Turkish officials have said that rescue operations have been completed in the three provinces of Adana, Kilis and Sanliurfa.
